Inside Passage

Stage Play with film

Playwright and Film Writer/Director

Stage Director: Sam Turich

Cinematography: Rob Long

World Premiere at Quantum Theatre, Pittsburgh, 2018

Based on playwright Gab Cody’s true experiences, Inside Passage meshes Gab’s patchy memories of her early childhood in Alaska spent with her parents, step-siblings, and Tlingit foster-siblings with family lore and her real-life quest for reunification 35 years later. An ensemble of six performers play a multitude of characters, re-enacting (and pre-enacting) Gab’s return to Alaska in search of siblings who may not wish to be found. Innovatively combining live performance and documentary film footage shot both in Pittsburgh and on-location in Alaska, Inside Passage is intimate, heartfelt, and funny.

(Short immersive experience)
"...the narrative unfolds through an exceptionally progressive sound design, which in turn acts as the most overt method of immersion. Simply having one of the most fascinating audio designs I’ve ever encountered was by far worth the two hour drive. The soundscape by District 5 (Pickett, Evans, Gotwald) provided the core thread of the narrative, a brief and arcing reflection on mortality which oscillates beautifully between the particular and universal. However, it was the suggestive lights, subtle tactile effects, and perfectly timed rhythm of the performers that completed the submersion into the dream-like world."

Daylighting the Stream

Full-length immersive experience

Writer/Co-Director

Workshop production with Works_On_Water/UnderwaterNY program in Nolan Park, Governor’s Island, NYC, 2019

Daylighting the Stream is an immersive, hypnagogic exploration of the subconscious mind buoyed by scientific and documentary material. We draw parallels between bodies of water and our bodies made-of-water and the interplay between the conscious, subconscious and dreaming minds.

“Daylighting” is the term for an infrastructure project that re-exposes waterways that have been covered for urban development, such as Seoul's daylighting project: Cheonggyecheon, and the daylighting of the Sawmill River in downtown Yonkers, NY. In Pittsburgh, city of rivers, a daylighting project is planned for the Panther Hollow waterway. We also have a "Fourth River" --an aquifer, water trapped between layers of earth. We're intrigued by water being trapped or hidden, and then being rediscovered, and literally brought to light.

The Alchemists Lab

Stage Play

Writer/Director/Lead Deviser

Point Park University Playhouse, Pittsburgh, PA 2013

Under the tutelage of playwright, filmmaker and storyteller, Gab Cody, twenty-four Point Park students have created a work never before seen anywhere. Ever. This amalgamation of wild characters, intricate storylines, improvisation and stand-up humor is loosely based on Ben Jonson's comedy, The Alchemist, first performed in 1610, and twisted into a more contemporary satire. Cheerleading, step routines, improvised songs, physical comedy.

PRUSSIA: 1866

Stage Play

Writer/Actor

Point Park University Playhouse, Pittsburgh, PA 2015

As we all know, when you think of comedy, you immediately think of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The REP, Point Park University's professional theatre company, rings in 2015 with the world premiere of Prussia: 1866, examines  Nietzsche and his proto-feminist friends. When confronted with a difficult life decision so many have asked, "What would Nietzsche do?" Prussia: 1866 asks this question and finds the answer is a farce. While some of the details of Nietzsche's life may not exactly jive with the details of the play, we do know he was alive, 22 and living in Prussia in 1866, and was, we imagine, a passionate and conniving young man at the time.

FAT BECKETT

Stage Play

Writer/Actor

Quantum Theatre, Pittsburgh, PA 2011

In this female homage to Waiting For Godot, two women find themselves trapped in an existential everywhere. Instead of an endless wait for an absent figure, however, Sophie and Kiki embark on an eternal search for their little lost goat, Biquette. The pair is fated to travel always together -- gorging on profiteroles, discussing the merits of a festival of vomiting donkeys, and arguing over whether it is worse to be condemned to stay in one place or to travel your entire life. Utilizing repetition, shadow puppets, slapstick, and mistranslation, Fat Beckett is a clever interrogation of the absurdities of human existence.
